Dog Series
I was working on a series called Foods and Nudes, when one of my models failed to appear. I looked down at my yellow Labrador, Tee Hee, and she looked back at me… with her expression of “so now what?” It was so very Tee. As our eyes locked, I quickly began to paint her image. That print, which later became known as "Nude Dog," was the birth of the Dog Series.
The canine parade began. Fifty-three dogs received appointments to come to the press and “sit” as my subjects at 1½ hour intervals. My goal, in these prints, was to tell not only what each dog was, but who each dog was. For obvious reasons, there was an urgency to each print. My challenge was to grasp the important elements of the subjects and the important elements of the printing process, both of which can be elusive, and to have prints emerge that would speak of the essence and mystery of both.
As a dog lover and a breeder of Labradors, dogs have always had a real presence in my life, and in my studio as well! It is no surprise that my own dogs have appeared frequently in my painting as well as my prints through out the years.
